Jiufen Old Street
Jiufen Old Street
There are two reasons why Jiufen Old Street is famous. The first reason is due to a Taiwanese movie called “A City of Sadness,” while the second reason is because of the Japanese animation master Hayao Miyazaki’s film “Spirited Away.” It is said that Miyazaki used the classic scene of the “A-Mei Tea House” in Jiufen Old Street to create a memorable scene in his film, making it one of the reasons why many foreign tourists visit Jiufen Old Street.
There are many shops selling various souvenirs, traditional snacks, and western desserts on the old street. Jiufen’s most distinctive specialty is “yuyuan,” and two stores, “Lai Ah-Po Yuyuan” and “Ah Gan Yi Yuyuan,” are must-visit places for many tourists. “Lai Ah-Po Yuyuan” is located on Jiufen Old Street, while “Ah Gan Yi Yuyuan” is located next to the stairs of the old street, not far from the famous “A-Mei Tea House.”
Another must-visit attraction in Jiufen is the “Shengping Theater.” It used to be the largest cinema in northern Taiwan, but due to serious population outflows in Jiufen, it suspended operations in 1986. Inside the theater, you can see the appearance of the cinema in the 1950s, which will make you feel as if you have traveled back in time to Taiwan in the 1950s.
At the end of Jiufen Old Street, there are many scenic cafes where you can enjoy distant mountain and sea views. If time permits, you can sit in a cafe, have lunch, drink coffee, and enjoy some leisurely time.
